Faced with the climate emergency and strict international environmental regulations imposed on the maritime sector, decarbonising maritime transport has become a top priority. At the heart of this industrial revolution, sail propulsion is emerging as one of the most promising solutions for the future.
Developed and patented by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the Solid Sail technology is based on a rigid sail made entirely from composite materials (carbon panels), which is self-supporting, can be rotated through 360° and folds like an accordion. Mounted on giant masts reaching heights of between 66 and 80 metres, this revolutionary sail reduces ships’ fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 40 to 50 per cent.
Today, Solid Sail is taking the leap into industrialisation: whether for zero-emission superyachts and cruise liners (Orient Express Silenseas) or sailing cargo ships such as the Neoliner, this technology is shaping the giants of the seas of tomorrow.

Working on carbon fibre rigs of this scale demands impeccable safety for the technicians and seafarers responsible for maintaining the ladders, tilting masts and spreaders. Working in an environment subject to strong winds, swell and salt spray presents a major engineering challenge.
It is within this context of extreme demands that Delta Plus Systems, a global specialist in personal and collective fall protection solutions, was commissioned to design and install bespoke access and safety restraint systems.
Bespoke fall protection solutions adapted to the marine environment
The technical study carried out by the Delta Plus teams required meticulous adaptation to the aerodynamic shapes and structural constraints of the Solid Sail rigging:

Initially tested on the 38-metre prototype in Saint-Nazaire and subsequently validated on the giant demonstration mast installed in Pornichet, the solution developed by Delta Plus is now operational to support the large-scale commercial roll-out of Solid Sail.
Through this complex project, Delta Plus reaffirms its commitment: to design cutting-edge engineering solutions tailored to the most ambitious structures in order to protect the lives of men and women at work, whilst actively supporting major technological innovations that drive the ecological transition.
