Navigating ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3 Performance Ratings
United States — ANSI/ISEA Z87.1: This standard is written directly into OSHA's PPE regulations, and it was just updated — ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025 published in January 2026, replacing the 2020 edition as the current national standard for testing, performance, and marking of eye and face protection. It's organized by hazard type (impact, optical radiation, splash, dust, mist), so managers can match a marking directly to a floor hazard. A frame stamped Z87+ has passed high-impact testing; a plain Z87 mark meets only the basic impact threshold. Know which one your team actually needs before you order in bulk.
Canada — CSA Z94.3-20: Covers the same core hazard categories — flying particles, splashing liquids, molten metal, and radiation — under Canadian certification. Any product certified by an accredited body (e.g., the Safety Equipment Institute) carries a permanent certification mark on at least one component of the finished product. If it's not stamped, it's not certified — full stop.
